Message from the CEO Re: Truth and Reconciliation Day and Orange Shirt Day

Greetings,

As you are likely aware, Tuesday, Sept. 30 is National Truth and Reconciliation Day, also known as Orange Shirt Day.

Orange Shirt Day recognizes and commemorates residential school survivors, as well as those who did not return home. This day provides an opportunity for Manitobans to reflect on the legacy of residential schools and the ongoing process of truth and reconciliation. Orange Shirt Day is meant to acknowledge the strength of survivors, addresses ongoing harm to Indigenous Peoples and to make a commitment to meaningful change.

On Sept. 30, I encourage staff to take the time to remember and acknowledge Truth & Reconciliation Day, either via quiet reflection, or attending events virtually or in person.

There are numerous events taking place across the province. Please see Truth and Reconciliation in Manitoba’s Public Service for more information, and materials about residential school history. The Department of Families is hosting a number of events in Winnipeg, Brandon and elsewhere over the next week, including webinars, hands-on opportunities and guest speakers. Please visit the SuccessFactors link for more information. The September 26th issue of Connect said “I encourage each of you to wear your orange shirt at work on Monday, Sept. 29 and on Sept. 30 in support of “Every Child Matters.”

Again, on Sept. 30 this year, as every year, we are reminded that “Every Child Matters.”

Best Regards,

Jay Rodgers
