From the Winnipeg Sun–Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, reports of youth being harmed online have increased by 80%, prompting officials at the Winnipeg-based Canadian Centre for Child Protection to redouble their efforts to keep children safe both online and off.
On Saturday, the organization marked Cybertip Awareness Day by promoting the release of several new free short videos for teens and preteens – as well as their parents and guardians – that address topics like healthy boundaries, consent, and red flag behaviour – subjects that can be uncomfortable to broach for families.
“Videos that we are providing are really about empowering youth and educating parents on what sorts of things that they can do to help keep themselves safe,” said Stephen Sauer, Director of Cybertip.ca. “It’s not just looking at online safety but safety in general. Looking at what child sexual abuse is and what that entails and how that can be both physical contact and non-physical contact and spotting red flag behaviours.
